The Wheeling Fire Department is a professional, paid department that protects the lives, property and environment of the citizens of Wheeling, WV. The City of Wheeling is located in the northern panhandle of the state of West Virginia.
The WFD operates out of seven fire stations. Its primary fleet of vehicles include 8 engine companies, 2 truck companies, 1 heavy rescue company, 3 ALS paramedic squads and 2 boats.
The hierarchy of command includes the Fire Chief and 6 Assistant Chiefs. 3 of these Assistant Chiefs are frontline commanding Duty Chiefs and the rest include Assistant Chief of Training and Assistant Chief of Inspection. The Department also has Fire Investigators as well. The list of ranks for frontline firefighters is as follows: Probationary Firefighter, Firefighter, Fire Engineer, Lieutenant and Captain.
The WFD's union affiliation is IAFF Local 12.
